Beautiful Barcelona

April 27, 2017

I spent a truly inspiring week in Barcelona this Easter - such a vibrant and colourful city! Have a look at my holiday photos for some fantastic mosaic inspiration. They illustrate a type of mosaic known as Trencadis. (also known as Picassiette) This type of mosaic recycles broken pieces of ceramic, like tiles and dinnerware. The Catalan architects Antoni Gaudí and Josep Maria Jujol used trencadis in a number of their projects, including ParK Güell and Casa Batlló. If you look closely at the images you can see broken glass bottles, cups, plates and saucers adding texture to the mosaics and reflecting light in all directions; broken tiles add pattern and vibrant colour. They are truly stunning mosaics.

There is so much to see in Barcelona. In addition to the Gaudi architecture, we also visited the cathedral, the Miro Museum, MNAC (Romanesque collection), the Picasso Museum and Montserrat. To reach the monastery at Montserrat we took the cable car up the mountain - this is quite an achievement for someone who is terrified of heights! I was richly rewarded with beautiful weather, stunning views and some very fine mosaics to enjoy!

As well as the wealth of art and architecture, I also very much enjoyed eating Chocolate con Churros for breakfast - what a treat!
